Aquaculture and Biodiversity
-journal article written by Malcom Beveridge, Lindsay Ross and Liam Kelly
This article explores the ugly side of aquaculture. While aquaculture has helped us to prevent the deletion of certain types of fish and the destruction of our ecosystems, aquaculture does not come without its negative effects on the environment. While aquaculture does produce a large amount of the fish that are being consumed today there are also some harmful toxins that they produce specifically when in a open ocean or lake environment. Some other negative effects include: - Pollution from fossil fuels - Unnatural species being introduced into the environment ( sometimes the fish that are being cultivated are not natural to the environment that they are being raised in and on occasion, they might escape and begin reproducing in this environment) - Harmful bacteria and Sea lice being spread, normally when one fish in the group gets sick they will pass it on to the other fish in the colonies that can then spread onto the natural sea life - Animals that are not a part of the aquaculture process might swim up and get caught in with all of the fish that are being produced, or they can get caught in their nets. |
